April 4, 2019: FB1 seminar

Prof. Dr. Kevin Lamb, Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Waterloo (Canada): "Internal Wave Generation at the Angolan Shelf"

Thursday, April 4, 2019:

11:00, Lecture Hall, Düsternbrooker Weg 20

Tide-topography interactions are the source of approximately half the internal wave energy in the ocean, with wind forcing being the other dominant generation mechanism. Tide-topography interactions can generate internal waves in a variety of forms including internal wave beams and internal solitary waves. These waves have important repercussions in the world’s ocean because of their role in mixing which affects productivity and ocean circulation. This mixing may occur far front the generation site. In this talk I will start with an introduction to internal wave generation by tide-topography interactions and then focus on internal wave generation at the Angolan shelf based on high-resolution two-dimensional simulations. Winter and summer stratifications will be considered and the effects of small scale bathymetric ripples will be discussed.
