GAME – Global Approach in Marine Ecology
GAME is an international research and training program for students of biology and environmental sciences. Since its founding in 2002 at GEOMAR's predecessor institute, GAME has offered young scientists the opportunity to study the effects of global change on coastal seas.
What makes GAME special is its comparative research across geographical and climatic boundaries, combined with the scientific training of master's students from Germany and GAME partner countries worldwide.
Each year, international teams of students work on a common research topic and simultaneously conduct identical experiments at up to ten locations worldwide. This modular approach, which is unique in marine research, delivers particularly meaningful results, as the data is not limited to a single ecosystem but paints a global picture from the tropics to high latitudes.
In addition to excellent research, the focus is on education: GAME specifically prepares students for scientific work abroad. A central element of this is the team concept, in which one German and one foreign participant work closely together. In this way, GAME combines scientific education with intensive cultural and social experiences. This is made possible by a strong international network of over 40 marine research institutes in more than 30 countries on six continents.
With this successful concept, GAME offers practical, research-oriented training and specifically prepares students for a career in science and research. In addition to technical expertise, goal-oriented work, teamwork, and intercultural competence are also promoted.
Students interested in the GAME program can find further insights into the master's program under “Learn more about GAME”.
Professors at German universities who would like to enable students to participate in GAME are invited to encourage suitable candidates to apply. The prerequisite is a willingness to supervise an external master's thesis in the field of marine benthic ecology.
