Student Assistant (m/f/d)

Deadline: 7th June 2026

The Geomicrobiology Group within the Research Unit Marine Geosystems is seeking, at the earliest possible date, a

Student Assistant (m/f/d)

to support technical and experimental work in the laboratory and during fieldwork.

The position is initially limited to three months, with the possibility of extension upon mutual agreement.

About us

As part of the Li-Mare research consortium, our group investigates how novel technologies for extracting critical raw materials from seawater may affect marine microorganisms and ecosystems. We conduct laboratory and incubation experiments with seawater and sediments to analyze shifts in microbial communities under simulated reactor conditions. Our work includes microbiological and molecular biological methods, cultivation experiments, as well as microscopic and chemical analyses.

Your tasks

  • Support incubation experiments with sediment cores and water samples
  • Assist with sampling campaigns and the preparation of environmental samples
  • Support microbiological and molecular biological laboratory work
  • Perform basic cell counting and laboratory analyses
  • Assist with data documentation and analysis (e.g. Excel or R)
  • General support of the laboratory team and technical staff

Your profile

  • Enrolled student in biology, marine sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field
  • Interest in microbiological, molecular biological, or marine research, as well as marine fieldwork and experimental research
  • Careful and reliable working style
  • Initial practical laboratory experience with microbiological or molecular biological methods is advantageous
  • Experience with Excel or R is desirable

We offer insights into current research in marine geomicrobiology and the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary and motivated team.
