Abstract:
The oceans are the largest reservoir of radiocarbon (14C), which is the most important dating tool for the last 50,000 years. Observations of dissolved 14C are a benchmark for ocean circulation models and are often used to infer present and past states of ocean ventilation. In my talk I will give an introduction to the marine 14C cycle and its modelling. One focus will be on the simulation of marine 14C archives at the sea surface, which are (still) important ingredients of the atmospheric IntCal 14C calibration curves that form the backbone of 14C dating.
