RV ALKOR in the Tyrrhenian Sea behind the smoking volcano Stromboli

ALKOR's research area is usually the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, but from the beginning of February 2020, the research vessel was operating in the Mediterranean for the first time. Various expeditions were on the programme here, including the AL533 voyage to the Lipari Islands with the active volcanoes Stromboli and Vulcano. Here, among other things, the interaction of the new AUVs ANTON and LUISE was part of the programme. The tests and training programme took place in differently structured terrain with shallow seabeds, but also on steep rocky slopes in water depths of up to 500 metres. The volcanic islands also offered wind shadow and only weak tidal currents. However, scientific observations were also made during the expedition, so important data on the flank structures of the active volcanoes of the Lipari Islands could be obtained, which will be very helpful for the evaluation of possible flank collapses.
