We are happy to assist with questions regarding data collection, analysis and visualization. The DSU can also provide resources for the planning and implementation of projects.

In order to find out how Data Science can be of help with your scientific task and to be able to provide a rough resource estimate, we would kindly ask you to write a one-pager about the scientific task at hand. This should include:

1. A preliminary scientific hypothesis
2. An outline of how Data Science can facilitate the progress/success of the proposed work
3. A summary of the data type and source. For a timely start of the work all relevant data should already be processed/published ideally according to the FAIR principles (https://www.go-fair.org/fair-principles).
4. And an estimate on the expected time line and DSU resource involvement.

Informal consultation hour

It is also worth mentioning that we offer a regular in-person consultation hour, which can be used to informally discuss ideas and projects (https://events.geomar.de). It takes place on the first Monday of each month and is announced shortly beforehand by e-mail.

Scientific visualization products

"A picture is worth a thousand words". But sometimes even a thousand words are not enough to transfer knowledge about a complex scientific process in an appealing and understandable way.

Through the EngageComm funds, the Data Science Unit launched the "SciVis Service" project, which offers young researchers the opportunity to develop and create appealing scientific illustrations and materials in collaboration with external partners that can be used in various media (print, web, interactive digital posters).

The offer comprises:

• Providing "Assessing-figures-as-a-Service" support,
• Provision of a visualization service with external graphic designers and
• Organization of two visualization courses for GEOMAR researchers (the courses are currently still being planned; dates will be announced in a timely manner via staff e-mail)

The products will use GEOMAR's corporate identity to increase the visibility of the GEOMAR team.
