Discover Doctoral Opportunities at GEOMAR
1. Applying for an advertised position
Apart from the Helmholtz School for Marine Data Science (MarDATA) coordinated at GEOMAR, GEOMAR does not have recurring annual application deadlines for doctoral positions.
Entry into a doctoral research project at GEOMAR usually takes place via our advertised job openings.
These positions already include:
- a specific research topic
- funding for the position
- a scientist at GEOMAR responsible for supervising the project
2. Own research idea or academic interest
If you are interested in specific research topics, you can first explore GEOMAR’s research divisions:
In addition, you may contact heads of research divisions or research units to discuss whether and how a doctoral project could be developed. The scientists themselves are best placed to assess whether suitable projects, grant proposals, or positions are currently available or planned in the future.
A doctorate with external funding – typically through a fellowship or scholarship – is generally possible. More information can be found below.
Our support
Please note that the Early Career Support Team provides general information about starting a doctorate at GEOMAR but does not arrange individual supervision relationships and does not forward enquiries to potential supervisors. You can reach us at youngtalents(at)geomar.de.
We would be delighted to welcome you soon as part of the doctoral community at GEOMAR.
And in the meantime: The image film of the City of Kiel shows Kiel at its best – where science, city life, and the sea come together.
Kiel – Dynamics and Balance by the Sea
Kiel is the capital of the German state of Schleswig-Holstein and, at the same time, the northernmost major city in Germany. The Kiel Fjord stretches deep into the heart of the city – opening horizons for its people and serving as an important hub.
