The GEOMAR Canteen

The GEOMAR campus has its own canteen since September 2026. Whether it’s for breakfast, a quick coffee break, or a leisurely lunch with colleagues—Building 8A offers a wide variety of food options Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The three menu lines

The warm lunch from the fresh kitchen follows three menu lines: "Heimathafen," "Expedition," and "Mee(h)rwert." Salads, soups, and desserts will also always be available.

  • Heimathafen: Regional classics and popular European dishes, prepared traditionally or in a modern style.

  • Expedition: Dishes from various culinary traditions, using regional ingredients.

  • Mee(h)rwert: Dishes with seasonal ingredients, plant-based proteins, and sustainably sourced products.

  • There will also always be salads, soups, and desserts available.

High standards for quality and sustainability

GEOMAR has agreed on a quality contract with the operator Primus, setting concrete targets in the areas of product, craftsmanship, and responsibility. These include, among other things, seasonal food, a high proportion of plant-based dishes, organic products, and requirements for meat and fish.

Under the agreed standards, 54 percent of the lunch offering is vegetarian or vegan. For certain product groups such as eggs, spices, tea, coffee, milk, cocoa, and bananas, the use of 100 percent organic products is planned. Across all product categories, the agreed organic share is 20 percent.

Requirements also apply to fish and seafood: wild-caught fish is selected according to the "Guter Fisch" (Good Fish) list, and aquaculture products must be at least ASC-certified.

Further components of the quality contract include the use of reusable packaging, the recording and reduction of food waste, and the option to access information on the carbon footprint of lunch dishes via the menu.
