Sustainability reporting
Starting with the 2024 reporting year, GEOMAR will publish an annual sustainability report and a greenhouse gas inventory to present our research and administrative activities in a transparent, traceable, and verifiable manner. Our goal is not only to report on progress but also to clearly identify challenges and provide an authentic assessment of developments. Transparency and credibility are at the heart of our communication.
Regular sustainability reporting helps us systematically track and evaluate the environmental, social, and economic impacts of our actions. The greenhouse gas inventory provides a reliable data foundation for our emissions and highlights the areas where the greatest opportunities for reduction lie. This allows us to identify specific opportunities, set priorities, and develop effective measures.
By updating both reports annually, we make progress measurable and developments comparable over time. This continuous process helps us to continually review and further develop our strategies and measures. We view sustainability management as a journey: data-driven, responsible, and focused on continuous improvement.
2024 Sustainability Report in accordance with VSME (EU reporting standard)
GEOMAR’s first sustainability report was prepared in accordance with the EU’s Voluntary Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Standard (VSME) for unlisted SMEs. These standards provide a useful framework for reporting and promote transparency and comparability. Since the report complies with the current reporting standard and was prepared on the German Sustainability Code (DNK) platform, it is initially very formal. The initial focus of the report’s preparation was on legal and standard compliance. In the coming years, the report will be tailored for various stakeholder groups. The report will be published on the DNK platform in the spring as soon as possible.

Certified Energy Management System DIN EN ISO 50001:2018
GEOMAR’s energy management system was certified to ISO 50001 in the spring of 2025. This certification confirms that the center systematically records, monitors, and continuously optimizes its energy consumption. The goal is to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs, and sustainably lower the environmental impact. In doing so, GEOMAR is also committing to a structured, long-term approach to energy conservation and resource preservation.
