Rhodomonas baltica culture

The microalga Rhodomonas sp. is a cryptophyte that is commonly used as a food alga, because it has a high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), also known as omega 3 fatty acid.

We culture Rhodomonas sp. in 50-L cylinders which allows us to sustainably feed organisms like bivalves, mussel larvae, fish larvae, copepods, balanids, sea squirts and sponges.

Sophisticated culture:

The cultures have to be run at a high hygiene level (including respricted access to the cylinders and several steps to regularly disinfect the culture water as well as whole culture system) because Rhodomonas sp. are very delicate organisms and cultures easily get contaminated with other organisms (ciliates, bakteria).
