In the framework of the Danish-German MYREcross Interreg project, GEOMAR Kiel is hosting a 5-day summer school for school students. The focus will be on methods of data processing and artificial intelligence in ocean and climate research.

Topics:

  • insights into some of GEOMAR’s research questions,
  • introduction to the Python programming language using examples from marine research,
  • application of simple neural networks to predict atmospheric data,
  • introduction to the analysis of ocean data using Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Programming, artificial intelligence and data analysis are getting more and more important not only in scientific research but also at university. In the summer school, we will explore the capabilities of the Python programming language through practical work and examine GIS applications for processing and visualising scientific data. The participants will use neural networks to forecast simple weather data based on meteorological measurements, whilst at the same time learning about the limitations of these methods. The programme will be complemented by presentations from experts from various research areas at GEOMAR. 

Application

Requirements: general interest in science and computing; curiosity to work in mixed Danish-German teams; desire to explore new topics in a relaxed atmosphere alongside other students. 

General Remarks: Participation is free of charge and computers will be provided. No programming experience or prior knowledge of AI is required. Travel and accommodation in Kiel have to be arranged privately.

Working Hours: Monday, July 6 to Friday July 10, 2026, from 9 a.m. to around 5 p.m.
