Prof. Dr. Jacqueline Boutin, LOCEAN, UPMC Paris (Frankreich): "Large and mesoscale salinity variability evidenced by SMOS: recent results and perspectives"

11:00 h, Gr. Konferenzraum, Düsternbrooker Weg 20

Abstract:

The SMOS satellite mission was launched in November 2009. It was the first time that an L-band radiometer using interferometry for earth observation was launched in space. In a first part, I will review the large scale interannual variability of sea surface salinity observed by SMOS from mid 2010 to mid 2013. This variability will be compared with the one estimated from in situ measurements. I will discuss the realism and drawbacks of SMOS data at large scale. In a second part, I will show the mesoscale variability measured by SMOS and its consistency with in situ measurements in the subtropical North Atlantic region.
