Abstract: Marine phytoplankton perform approximately half of global CO2 uptake. The field of microbial oceanography is just beginning to fully appreciate the diversity and distributional patterns of these algae, but controls are much less well understood. Increased stratification is predicted in several climate change scenarios which will change resource availability in the surface ocean. Hence it is critical that we understand algal responses to enhanced limitation by nutrients and other key compounds. Through genome science, experimental work in advanced bioreactors and field expeditions we are gaining new insights into the ecology of key eukaryotic marine algae. Here, we will discuss how paradigms on their vitamin requirements are changing as well as advances in understanding of algal physiology that reshape how we think about primary production, bloom development and phytoplankton evolution.
