Abstract:
A relaxation approach is introduced that allows to pull the ECMWF model in certain regions towards reanalysis data during the course of the integration. The value of this diagnostic technique is demonstrated by discussing tropical, stratospheric and Arctic origins of mid-latitude forecast error. Furthermore, the physics underlying recent cold European winters such as the one in 2005/06 and 2009/10 will be explored.
