Abstract:
Salinity plays an important role in the global ocean including water mass formation, density and circulation, heat storage, air–sea interactions, and the hydrological cycle. Understanding salinity variability is therefore paramount toward understanding global climate. Yet, such studies have been limited due to the paucity of salinity measurements in the global ocean. The advent of satellite-derived sea surface salinity (SSS) measurements has helped fill some of the gap, boosting such scientific studies. This presentation focuses on the applications of satellite-derived salinity data in understanding SSS variability in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Monsoon-influenced seasonal variability and interannual Indian Ocean Dipole climate impacts are highlighted.
