Abstract:
The contribution of aerosols to the Earth’s changing energy budget is still subject to considerable uncertainty, not least due to limited process-level understanding. Mineral dust from dry soils is the dominant aerosol type in terms of global mass and it is also amongst the most important substrates for cloud formation through heterogeneous ice nucleation. Dust therefore has important impacts on climate, but also on air quality and health, road and air traffic, economy, and not least photovoltaic power output in many areas of the world including Europe. All impacts are largely determined by the dust physico-chemical properties, e.g. amount, particle-size distribution, shape, composition, and chemical aging, which in turn are a result of the complex processes in which dust is involved along its life-cycle, such as emission, atmospheric transport, dry and wet deposition, and interactions with clouds, radiation, and other atmospheric constituents. In this presentation, I will give an overview of our research toward advancing understanding of these processes and interactions using theory, modeling, and observations, with the goal to improve process representations in models, and to better constrain quantitative estimates of dust impacts.
