Abstract:
Various aspects of ocean-atmosphere interaction across a range of spatial and temporal scales in the SubPolar North Atlantic (SPNA) will be discussed from a combined observation/model-based perspective. These will include intense Greenland tip jet heat loss events at 50-500 km scales in the Irminger Sea as well as their large scale controls which include the interplay between the North Atlantic Oscillation and East Atlantic Pattern. At sub-basin scale, the relative roles of air-sea heat exchange and ocean advection for interannual mixed layer heat content anomalies in the eastern SPNA will be explored and a significant change in the balance of these two terms identified. Finally, ongoing work that seeks to identify the impacts of surface salinity anomalies (via increased near surface stratification) in the western SPNA for air-sea heat exchange and storm frequency will be presented.
