The overall aim of this practical for students of MSc Biological Oceanography is to investigate the microbial turn-over of organic matter in the water-column and at the air-sea interface in the Baltic Sea. The students shall learn and practice state of the art sampling and analytical methodology for determining microbial community composition, productivity and growth, as well as organic matter compound analysis. For the water column, sampling will be conducted by CTD rosette and for the sea surface microlayer sampling will be operated from a Zodiak and conducted with a glass plate sampler.
