The expedition TRANSDRIFT XXIII with the Russian research vessel VIKTOR BUYNITSKIY is part of the project "Laptev Sea System - The trans-polar system of the Arctic Ocean". It's aim is to better understand the large-scale environmental changes in the Arctic and their impacts on Europe. The binational project is funded by Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and supported by the Russian Ministry of Education and Research. It is based on many years of joint German-Russian research in the Laptev Sea.
During the expedition, three observatories at various positions in the Laptev Sea are recovered. They have been deployed during the expedition TRANSDRIFT XXI in late summer 2013. Each observatory consists of several measuring instruments that record the ice thickness, ice drift, salinity, current speed, water temperatures and other physical and chemical parameters. One year ago, the observatories had already been recovered during the expedition TRANSDRIFT XXII to obtain the data and to maintain the equipment. The team then had moored the observatories on the seabed again. ,
The current expedition starts and ends in the Siberian port of Tiksi.
