The focus of the esearch cruise SO299/2 with RV SONNE is the small Krakatau archipelago in the Sunda Strait. The archipelago is the product of a major volcanic eruption in 1883, one of the largest explosive eruption historic times, and a catastrophic sector collapse in 2018, when a large segment of the volcano Anak Krakatau (0.1 - 0.3 km³) slid into the Sunda Strait. Both events caused devastating tsunamis.
The generation of tsunamis by volcanic processes is only poorly understood. Research cruise SO299/2 aims to acquire geophysical and geological data needed to fill these critical observational gaps. We will survey the deposits of the 2018 sector collapse as well as the pyroclastic flow deposits from 1883 eruption of Krakatau using seismic reflection profiling, sediment coring and photogrammetric drone surveying. The main goal of the proposed experiments is to gain a better understanding about the geological processes controlling volcanogenic tsunami genesis, and to investigate post-collapse material redeposition and erosion processes.
