ALKOR AL652/2

Area:
Baltic Sea
Time:
25.05.2026 - 02.06.2026
Institution:
GEOMAR
Chief scientist:
Jens Greinert

The second phase of the expedition AL652 will focus on mapping and capturing the occurrence of two specific macro algea species. In the associated project, ‘ROVKA – Reefs of the Baltic Sea - Occurrence and climate protection performance of Fucus and Saccharina in the German EEZ’, the reef areas will be mapped successively and a number of focus areas will be systematically revisited over the coming years for monitoring purposes.
This data, together with the results of the analyses derived from the sampling, will then provide insights into the contribution of the macrophytes to long-term CO₂ storage.

We intend to visit the ‘Adlergrund’, ‘Kadetrinne’ and ‘Fehmarn Belt’ areas to collect hydroacoustic and optical data. We are planning numerous AUV missions, as well as OFOS and MBES surveys. We also intend to take sediment samples at specific stations.
