METEOR M141/1

Area:
Atlantic, Azores

Thor Hansteen

The voyage M141 of RV METEOR aims to identify the age, source and eruptive style of large explosive volcanic eruptions that originated from islands in the Azores archipelago during the last several hundred thousand years, and to investigate possible links to tsunamigenic sector collapses. Using gravity/piston corer as a main tool, the cruise is designed to recover long marine sediment cores that provide records on the frequencies of large volcanic eruptions, and for critical areas complement bathymetric mapping and seismic profiling of earlier cruises. The combined data will be used to reconstruct the interplay between large volcanic eruptions and landslide activity.
