METEOR M105

Area:
Tropical Atlantic
Time:
17.03.2014 - 16.04.2014
Institution:
GEOMAR
Chief scientist:
Martin Visbeck

The expedition M105 is taking place as part of the Collaborative Research Center 754: “Climate-Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean”. The distribution of oxygen in and surround the oxygen minimum zones (OMZ) in the Tropical Atlantic will be analysed. During the expedition the spread of an artificial trace substance, that was released in this region in autumn 2012,will be tracked. With the help of this tracer and his distribution scientists can comprehend the horizontal oxygen supply route in the OMZ. Central aspects of the research are the analysis of the oxygen supply and oxygen distribution in North Atlantic.
Furthermore there will be a zooplankton-sampling to elucidate the role of it in biogeochemical cycles. Additionally researchers will perform experiments on board in order to quantify the nitrogen fixation in the ocean.
During the whole cruise continours surface water measurements will be conducted (temperature, salinity, partial pressure of carbondioxide and dissolved oxygen concentration).
